I apologize for the lapse last week. I was planning on posting some new strips but lamed-out. Partly due to a cold, partly due to (I’ll admit it) a ski trip and partly due to just being a lame-o.
But, hey, at least the Skinny Panda Reader Map has been chugging along without my attention. At last count, there are readers from 13 countries represented! And 33 photos! If you haven’t yet, go check it out and add your own little, red, pointy thing.
I hope you’re enjoying your holiday. However, if you’re one of those obliged to be at work today, why not stick one to The Man by enjoying the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day links on company time...
I’ve finally started doing some non-SP Flash animation (my New Year’s resolution). I’ll be sure to post them for you when they’re ready... but don’t hold your breath.
Sorry about missing Wednesday’s strip last week. I’ve been busier with freelance web work and sketch comedy. At least I’m getting sleep. In the refrigerator, though, I’ve only got some cream cheese and a bag of old spinach. Recipes, anyone?
Sorry I’m posting so late this week. I’m back on my horrendous, vampiric sleep schedule. Sleepy... all... the... time...
You know, when I mentioned last week that I only had cream cheese and spinach in my fridge and asked you all for recipes, I thought it was just a futile request. But, lo... you weirdos delivered – big time. Thanks go out to Jen, Spoon, Jennster, Amy, Anonymoose and Saffron for the wide range of recipes (jeez, I hope I didn’t miss anyone. If I did, please tell me and I’ll edit this post.)
And you can find Saffron’s recipe for “Really Tasty Spinach Puffs” here in the forums.
And in case you’re wondering, I think I just ended-up eating potato chips that day.
So if you haven’t heard yet, we got hit with the largest single snowfall in New York City’s recorded history. It’s awesome. It almost makes me wish I had someplace to go. The scenes on TV look pretty.
NPR’s weekly news quiz/comedy show “Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!” now has a podcast! It’s neat to hear how varied the answering machine messages by Carl Kasell are. Take a listen to Carl singing “What’s New, Pussycat?”
Just so sleepy.
Sorry for the late start this week. I’ve been somewhat busy with websites, illustrations and sketch writing. It’s a bit daunting, but at least I’m not watching as much TV (bad thing?)
Jonathan asked an interesting question in the forums about Skinny Panda goodies (books, prints, etc.). What kind of stuff would you like to see? Any suggestions on how to make the process easier for my lazy butt? Time to make some noise, people! Boom-shakalaka!
It looks like I’m going to have to take an impromptu vacation this week. I’m just a little too far behind in my other work and could really use the extra time to catch-up.
I’m sorry this message comes so late. I hope you’ll excuse me on this one. And if not... well, then I hope you’ll accept kissies.
Thanks for allowing me some time to get my workload back in check. As promised, kissies for everyone...
Notice how I used capital kissies.
So my one-year sabbatical from the full-time working world is almost up. In two weeks, it’ll be time for me to self-evaluate and decide ”What hath Phil wrought?“
How do you think the last year has been for Skinny Panda? Has it improved? Deproved? Is it going anywhere? I’ve created a poll in the forums for you to sound-off and maybe, just maybe, talk some sense into me.
Hmm... this missing Mondays thing has become a bad habit. I’m very embarrassed. Things are starting to clear-up around here, though, so let’s be sanguine about the future.
Hey, thanks for all the thoughtful replies to my question from last week on the status of the strip (the “State of the Skinny?”). If you want to read them, or join in on the discussion, feel free to miscreant your way over to the forums.
Okay, missing four Mondays in a row is my limit. We officially have a chronic problem. I promise (PROMISE) to get my butt in gear.
Feel free to chastize me over email or in the forums, if you wish.
Woohoo! A successful Monday!
And woohoo! It’s baseball season again!
Furthermore, woohoo! A new Gilmore Girls this week!
Plus, I still have to do my taxes!
Ay, ay, ay. Sorry, folks. Back to bad habits. I’m working on it.
Just so busy lately. I haven’t even had time to watch baseball. And the Red Sox are off to a promising start this year. In fact, I ask of you, “what could POSSIBLY go wrong?”
Just a note to tell you that I’m still very much alive... and very much apologetic.
I forgot to mention that I recently started taking paid work again. Fortunately, I have amazing friends who have found me lots of great freelance and part-time jobs. Unfortunately, I’ve had to neglect many things while I find my bearings. Skinny Panda, sadly, being one of them.
I hope to have a new strip up next Monday, though. So please check back then.
Thanks a TON.
Thanks for being patient with me while I was away. I can’t say I’m completely back on-track with my workload yet but I will try not to leave you in the dark the next time I go on a long break.
Hey, peeps. This is my attempt to keep you in-the-loopsy better.
Unfortunately, I have to miss today's post. I've got a crazy amount of work to do through the weekend. I may have something for Monday but it will be tough. I'll keep you posted.
Unfortunately, I need some more time off. I’ve got a serious load of work to do — both paid and unpaid — including my sketch comedy group’s next show in NYC on May 20 (at the Gene Frankel Theatre at 9pm).
I hope to have some new strips up soon. I’m not exactly sure when, but soon. Thanks for putting up with my nonsense.
Woo hoo! We’re back!
Ahh... it’s nice to breathe again. Now that my comedy show’s over I can get back to the rest of my life. Couple that with the end of the TV season and I may even have time to go back to the GYM! (Ho ho ho ho ho.... I crack myself up...)
Anyhow, thanks a lot for your patience, folks. I appreciate it so muchly.
Just under the wire, baby!
Deadlines... they so rule.
If you haven't heard Jonathan Coulton's music yet, well, wakey-wakey. His lyrics are hilarious and—*bonus*— many of his songs are FREE!
Check out his Songs page and take a listen to "Ikea," "Re Your Brains," "Code Monkey," an acoustic version of "Baby Got Back" and, for all you fans of NPR Radio in New York City, you'll love "Dance, Soterios Johnson, Dance." Click on the smiley faces to download free songs or get more by subscribing to his podcast.
I bought an ice-cream/sorbet machine last week. My freezer is full of aaaalmost successful attempts at frozen treats. They’re basically good, but not quite good enough to make me crave them. One’s a little too icy. One’s a little too milky. So they’ll probably just sit there for a while... getting harder. It’s sad, I know.
Hey, congrats go out to my buddy and SP cheermonster, Dave, who just published the first Todd & Penguin book! If you like SP, you'll love Todd & Penguin. So shoot over there and pick-up a copy.
Oh, and be sure to check-out my subtle cameo.
Sorry for the late start this week. Things at work(s) have been gearing-up again. But, hey, we all have the long weekend to recover so let's wish for a short week ahead. (Am I making any sense right now? I feel obtuse.)
With summer times come summer tunes! If you've got a hankering for disco, take a listen to the first single from my brother's new band, Escort. If you like what you hear, look for the album at your local record store soon. And if you're in the NYC area on August 12, their 14-member outfit will be performing at that monstrous bash at PS1.
Sorry, gang, I don't have a strip ready for today. And since I'll be away for the holiday weekend, I probably won't have the next episode posted until Wednesday. Till then, be good, be independent and don't tread on me.
I hate to do this but I have to take this week off. I'm just a bit overwhelmed right now. I apologize to no end.
Thanks for being patient with me.
This year's Web Cartoonists' Choice Awards winners have been announced! Go check out the full list and, hey, you might even learn something...
My buddies, Umang and Yash, have finally launched their Desi-themed t-shirt site, Chorbazzar. They've got some sick-kewl designs for your skin-covering needs.
You Los Angelenos can now catch Skinny Panda in the comics section of the free weekly newspaper, Entertainment Today.
Be sure to read it conspicuously in front of local news cameras. And if they tell you to move out of the way, you tell them “but it’s a dry heat.” Because, you know, that’s your retort for everything.
Where does the typical Skinny Panda reader live? What do they look like? What are they shoutouting about?
Find the answers to these questions (and nothing more!) at the Skinny Panda Reader Map!
At last count we’ve got 13 countries represented! And 36 photos! Including three pandas, one doggie, one stuffed platypus, one cow-man, one Amish tiger and one roasted guinea pig (I kid you not).
Hullo, poopies. I'm serving you with advance notice (for once) that Skinny Panda will be off next week whilst I enjoy a much-needed vacation in guava-licious Hawaii. (I know... my life is hard...)
But what is one to do whilst Phil is away from the mainland? I'll tell you what you do: You PARTY! If you're in the NYC area this Saturday, Aug. 12, you can dance the summer to bits at the huge, sunny, convivial Warm Up Party at PS1. My brother's massive, 14-piece disco band, Escort, will be performing live and in-funky. I'll be there and I hope you will too. Escort starts at 6pm so you should try to get there around 4 or 5pm as the line can get long. And funky.
Hey, I'm back from Hawaii! Tanned, rested and covered in a prickly heat rash (it's so gross. I can't stop looking at it).
Congrats go out to my friends Ingrid & Russell who tied-the-lei in the most idyllic wedding you've ever seen. Sunsets over the ocean, pink parasols—the works. It was so gross. I couldn't stop looking at it.
A big shout-out to Eric over at ComicStripFan.com whom I lunched with in Kauai. He's amassing a truly impressive collection of original comic art over there. I am humbly honored to be included. You can view the drawing I gave him and some pages from my sketchbook here. Super-nice guy. Go check out his stuff and drop him an aloha.
My heat rash is about 75% better and I just picked-up a doll of Beaker from "The Muppet Show" (Beaker sings "Feelings") so this can only mean one thing: my favorite season, Autumn, is upon us! Woohoo! I hate summer! Woohoo!
Hey, if you haven't seen the modest collection of Fan Art yet, go check it out! And if you've got the inclination to make a sketch, doodle or sand statue related to Skinny Panda, act on it! Don't be a "shoulda-coulda-woulda"! Be a "dida-dooda-nowda"!
In a shameless move to drive-up forum traffic, here's a link to a funny video starring a baby panda who sneezes.
Oh, jeez, now I'm exploiting baby pandas...
Looks like no new strip for today. Sorry, everyone. I'm working off-site on a consulting job for another week. I'll try to get my act together over the weekend. Thanks.
It looks like it's going to be another "off" week. Sorry, folks. Once I'm done with this consulting job, I'll be back. Till then, be excellent to each other.
Hullo, peeps. Thanks for letting me take a little time off last week. It did wonders for my sleep schedule (I sleep at night now!)
A big congrat-u-mats to Fritz & Nica who hosted a superb, pictureque, New Englandical wedding party this past weekend, replete with grassy, oceanside knolls, alphorns and contra dancing(!) Who knew I had the talent to be a first-class contra dancer? (That's right: no one!)
I posted a question in the forums that I'm hoping one of you can answer: how does one make a smooth and creamy sorbet?
Help me, please. It's driving me nuts.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice for my smooooth sorbet problem. Still haven't found the holy grail but it's certainly one of your less painful trials. And, thus, I shall continue.
Oh, and I hope the Yankees lose.
Sorry, folks, no strip today. I've been up all night working on a freelance project. I'm so tired, I can't even think of a witty way to end this paragraph.
Well, not much news to report this week... although I am pleased that the Yankees lost. I have to admit that I actually feel a little bad for those guys. Even A-Rod.
Although, come next season, I'll be ready to hate them all again. It's just too much fun.
As of October 14, Skinny Panda turned 7! That's right! The big 0-7! In Phil years, that's one million!
But, seriously, as much as I whine and pout, I really do appreciate all of the support you folks give me week after week (and hiatus after hiatus). Without it, I'd be... well, I probably be watching TV or something. Hell, I'll go watch TV right now—I deserve it...
Sorry for flaking-out last Friday. I had a new stick figure strip almost ready but couldn't come up with a decent ending. Hopefully, it'll see light this week.
I went to the doctor for a check-up and found that I'd gained 10 pounds over the past year (and I assure you, none of that is muscle mass). And when I received my new state ID card, I was shocked at how bulbous my cheeks appeared in the photo. It is my daring conclusion that avoiding the gym can have deleterious effects by month 18.
Hey, peeps. Sorry again for being away for so long. Coming-up with a stick figure strip has been driving me batty and it spilled-over into all of my other work. What can I say? I'm not a multi-tasker.
And the woes keep on comin'... looks like I won't have a strip for today. And I'm off to California for several days so I probably won't have anything up on Monday either. Sorry. Please don't smite me.
For a quick fix of stick figure trippin', you can check out my guest strip up on Todd & Penguin.
Sorry for the extended absence. I fell off of the inspiration wagon for a bit.... and I was drunk, too.
In the meantime, I did have the pleasure of flying-off to two weddings recently. And so, big congrat-u-matri-matsu to Schmoozin' and Imperial Scott who tied the knot twice. Once for a show on HGTV, and once for the rest of us unphotogenic schmoes.
And another big holla-koala to Ernesto and Charmesto, who tricked my ass into flying down to Jacksonville, Florida. However, it was a lovely time and I met some great people—many of whom, sadly, didn't zig-zag enough to survive the alligator attacks.
Sorry, folks, looks like no new strips this week. I'll be leaving town for the holidays but should be back next Monday.
So, for those of you celebrating the American Thanksgiving, have a good one. For those of you who aren't... well... enjoy the football... er... cold weather... or... um... any other non-geographically-specific event.
Well, children, I hope you all enjoyed your little T-Day break. I certainly did. Ate much. Drank much. Partied a smidge. Watched copious amounts of television. Did nothing of societal value. Still recovering.
Sorry, folks, it looks like I'm going to have to take this week off whilst I get myself back-in-whack. So little time... so much to whack...
Sorry for starting late this week. I'm still recovering from the excessive gastro-hedonistic indulgence of my brother's big three-oh b-day party. Celery soup, sashimi, duck cassoulet... it was madness. The chef also makes a splendiferously crunchy okra pickle.
Anyhow, happy birthday, kid. Get me a PS3 for Christmas.

Sorry for the inconsistency with the posts. I am trying to stick to a M-W-F schedule. However, getting to sleep at a reasonable hour is a high priority these days.
When Skinny Panda first started nine years ago (PUNG!), I had no problem getting through the workday on 3 hours of sleep. But now that I'm old and crusty, I need at least seven or else my gizzards fall out.
So why did I decide to "go color" these past few weeks even though it adds hours to the process? Ho ho ho... stop asking silly questions, you silly munchkin...
